PET - Polyethylene Terephthalate

PET (also referred to as PET-P) is one of the most widely used technical plastics for precision mechanical components. It combines high tensile strength with excellent dimensional stability, a low coefficient of friction and near-zero moisture absorption — making it the preferred choice for wear-critical, high-accuracy industrial parts.

PET – Polyethylene Terephthalate

PET belongs to the semi-crystalline thermoplastic group and alongside POM-C and cast PA6, it is one of the three most established engineering plastics for precision machined components in mechanical engineering. Its defining advantage is the combination of high dimensional stability with a very low coefficient of friction.

Unlike polyamide grades, PET absorbs virtually no moisture. This means components retain their geometry in wet, humid or aqueous environments without measurable dimensional change. Its low thermal expansion coefficient further ensures that tight tolerances are maintained across varying operating temperatures.

PET is used for precision gears, wear pads, guide rollers, plain bearings, bushings, turntables and track rollers. Its high chemical resistance and physiological suitability also make it a reliable choice for components in food processing and packaging machinery.

High Tensile Strength

Tensile strength up to 80 MPa.

Dimensional Stability

Tight tolerances maintained across temperature and humidity variations.

High Chemical Resistance

Resistant to oils, greases, fuels and common industrial chemicals.

Near-Zero Moisture Absorption

Dimensionally stable in wet and humid environments.

Low Coefficient of Friction

Suitable for sliding, rolling and wear-contact surfaces without lubrication.

Low Thermal Expansion

Maintains precision fit at varying operating temperatures.

Available Product Forms

PET is available in standard semi-finished forms ready for machining or direct application. Log in to check live stock availability, pricing and lead times for your specific dimensions.

Sheets

Flat sheet format 1000 × 610 mm, thicknesses 10–100 mm. Standard stock for machining precision components and structural parts.

Round Bars

Solid bars Ø 10–200 mm in standard and made-to-order lengths. Available in 1000 mm and 3000 mm lengths.

Cut-to-Size

Custom cut to your exact dimensions from standard sheet or bar stock. Reduces waste and machine time on your end.

Finished Parts

CNC-machined parts to your technical drawings and tolerance requirements. Single pieces or production runs.

Typical Applications

PET is used wherever dimensional precision, wear resistance and low friction are required under sustained mechanical load.

Precision Gears & Sprockets

PET's dimensional stability and low friction make it a direct fit for gears, worm gears and sprocket wheels in precision mechanical engineering. Tight tolerances are maintained even under load and temperature variation.

Wear Pads & Track Rollers

Used as wear pads, track rollers and contact elements in conveyor systems and production lines where consistent abrasion resistance and long service intervals are required.

Plain Bearings & Bushings

Guide rollers, plain bearings and flanged bushings for dry-running or minimally lubricated conditions. Offers a weight and friction advantage over metal alternatives.

Turntables & Rotating Elements

Applied in rotating and sliding assemblies where stable geometry and consistent friction values across operating cycles are critical to system reliability.

Food Processing Components

PET's high chemical resistance, near-zero moisture absorption and food-contact suitability make it a reliable choice for components in food processing and packaging lines.

Precision Structural Parts

A preferred base material for CNC-machined housings, fixtures and structural components in plant engineering where dimensional accuracy across temperature ranges is required.
