ABS – Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene

ABS is the specified material for prototype design and model production in engineering and product development. Through a unique tempering process, residual stress is completely eliminated, which results in excellent machinability, precise dimensional stability and clean, accurate surfaces after machining. Available in sheets from 10 to 200 mm thickness for large block machining requirements.

ABS – Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene

ABS as supplied by COMCO EPP is a purpose-prepared material for prototype design and model production. The key differentiator is the tempering process applied during manufacture. Residual internal stress, which is present in standard extruded ABS sheets, is fully eliminated through this process.

For engineering departments, model shops and product development teams that produce prototype components, jigs, fixtures and design models, these properties are directly relevant. Machining stress-free ABS produces cleaner results, tighter tolerances and a better surface finish than standard ABS sheet, and the material behaves consistently across the full thickness range from 10 to 200 mm.

ABS is easy to process across all standard machining operations including CNC milling, turning and drilling. It is available in natural and black as standard and in other colours on request. All ABS sheets are produced to order across a range of sheet formats and thicknesses. Rods, blanks and finished parts are also available to your drawings and specifications.

Typical Applications

ABS is used by engineering teams, model shops and product development departments wherever dimensionally accurate, machinable plastic blocks and sheets are required for prototype and model production.

Prototype Design and Model Production

The primary application for ABS in this grade. Engineering departments and model shops use stress-free ABS sheets and blocks to machine accurate prototype components, design models and concept parts before committing to production tooling.

Jigs and Fixtures

ABS blocks are machined into jigs, fixtures and assembly aids where dimensional accuracy, light weight and ease of modification are required during product development phases.

Concept and Presentation Models

Used for physical design models and presentation prototypes where a clean surface finish, accurate dimensions and the ability to paint, bond or coat the material are required.

Pattern Making

ABS blocks are used in pattern making for casting and forming processes, where the accuracy and machinability of the material allow precise patterns to be produced quickly.

Development Tooling

Used for short-run development tooling and soft tooling applications where a machinable, dimensionally stable plastic is required as an alternative to aluminium or steel tooling at lower cost and lead time.

Functional Test Components

Machined ABS components are used for fit, form and function testing in product development where the mechanical and dimensional characteristics of the prototype need to closely represent the final design.
