Why Repeated Sterilisation Challenges Engineering Plastics
Each reprocessing cycle combines mechanical use, cleaning chemicals, disinfection and steam sterilisation at approximately 134 °C. Repeated temperature cycles and aggressive cleaning media cause many engineering plastics to lose toughness, turn cloudy, embrittle and crack. Components also have to survive being dropped on hard floors, and they must keep their dimensional accuracy so that assemblies continue to fit. A material that passes ten cycles but fails after a hundred takes the whole instrument out of service.
Why PPSU Is Used for Reusable Components
PPSU offers exceptionally high impact strength within the sulphone polymer family and retains its toughness at lower temperatures. It is permanently resistant to hydrolysis and hot water, withstands repeated steam sterilisation and has a continuous operating temperature of approximately 180 °C. It is resistant to many commonly used cleaning and disinfection media; compatibility with the specific chemicals and concentrations of an application is confirmed by application-specific testing.

PPSU General Grade
The general grade covers industrial applications: hot-water environments, fluid technology, membrane housings and components that benefit from hydrolysis resistance and, where appropriate, repeated sterilisation. It is the standard choice outside regulated medical use.
PPSU Medical Grade
PPSU MG (Medical Grade) is supplied for reusable medical components: instrument handles, trays, housings and device components. Medical Grade means the material is delivered with the corresponding material documentation. The application-specific evaluation, including any patient-contact assessment, remains the responsibility of the medical-device manufacturer. Medical Grade does not constitute an automatic medical-device approval, a universal patient-contact approval, universal biocompatibility or suitability for every sterilisation method.
What Does “More Than 1,000 Sterilisation Cycles” Mean?
The figure is frequently quoted and worth reading precisely. It applies to selected PPSU grades, is documented by the raw-material manufacturers and was established under defined test conditions. It cannot automatically be transferred to every finished component: cleaning chemistry, component design and the actual reprocessing procedure remain relevant, and the medical-device manufacturer remains responsible for the final material assessment. Read correctly, the figure shows the headroom of the material class, not a guaranteed component lifetime.
